iiP Essay

My name is Terry Jones. The International Interview Project is a project that’ll help us know more about the world around us. My Country was Costa Rica . Costa Rica is a small town no bigger than West Virginia . My group Terry, Jane, and Brenda are going to get some brief information about this country but in certain topics. The topic ideas that we chose was Education, Religion, Women’s Issues, and Some Health Care.

We began our interview by talking about education. We asked, “How in Education in Costa Rica different from education in the United States of America ? He answered “Education in Costa Rica is different. We have primary and secondary school and we have elementary, middle, and high school.” He’s telling us that schooling is different in Costa Rica because the go to two schools instead of three, by which that means that they go to one school for 6 years each. Then we asked, “What’s the different races in Costa Rica education.” He answered, “We have all types of cultures in education, from dark people to light people.” Costa has many different cultures in their schooling system. It must really be good because with all types of people it makes a very good blend.

Later on he talked about education in his country and from what he says is that college is a real big step to Costa Rica people. He said, “They have to study really hard in High School so that they can get into a really good university because many others are trying to get it so it’s basically 1st comes 1st serves.” According to what he was saying people in Costa Rica try really hard because they know that they really want to be somebody in life in have a really good education. They know that college is the right way to go. Then when we continuing talking about universities he said that, “Many Costa Rica people go to college in the America’s because in America we feel that we have getting better education, and they give more scholarships.” Comparing Costa Rica and USA universities, they feel that USA give more scholarships and have better education than Costa Rica .

Toward the end of the interview, He said "The grading system in Costa Rica is very different, we grade by number instead of letters. Our grading system is 0-100 than A-F." It figures that Costa Rica schooling grades by numbers, so by example a B in our schooling is an 80% in their schooling so it’s basically the same but instead they use number. I was very interested in why they used numbers then he said, “Depending the number is you get from 0-100 is the way they see how many universities you can get in.” He saying so if you get like a 70% you can get in a state or university but if have a 90% you can get many scholarships and many universities will except you into their school.

With the Costa Rica man coming through I learned many things about his country to cultures, the universities, regions, and much more. I really liked he felt real open and talked to us about his country. But my favorite part of the interview was when I thought Costa Rica was in the Bahamas . The man and my group laughed because Costa Rica is in Central America , and I was like oh. I felt that Costa Rica has a lot to offer to people of the world.
